African Roots Guesthouse was originally a private residence to a tourism professor built in early 2000’s. Agnes Larubi & Anna Nagawa (co owners) discovered this property in 2012 where together they birthed The African Roots dream!

OUR MENU

Our chefs have created a menu that reflects what African Roots is all about – Simple, laid back and fresh. All our dishes are designed to use only the freshest readily available ingredients from either locally sourced suppliers or our own backyard garden. Breakfasts are included in the room rate; lunch menu is available through-out the day and available to order on an a-la-carte basis. 

SIMPLE AND FRESH

Our dining area is within the main house just adjacent to the lobby covered in lovely African paintings & masks. Each evening African Roots serves fresh and tasty full course meals. If you have any special dietary requirements, just let us know in advance and we will be happy to alter the menu for you. Please note that dinner bookings are by reservation only.

THE ROOTS BAR

We actively seek local producers of beers and spirits to feature at The Roost’s bar plus other exotic brands. Drinks are held overlooking the Guesthouse mini grden which makes an ideal location for a pre-dinner evening drink.

Rooms at the lodge

African Roots Guesthouse has just ten bedrooms. The original part of the property, the main house has five ‘House Rooms’& the original visitor’s wing has two ‘Family Rooms’. Our newest addition is the Rustic Cottage Rooms that offers the “Safari experience” across the property’s garden. Eight rooms are en suite and two are non en suite. All rooms include free fast wifi, a desk, chair, firm mattresses, Custom-designed mosquito nets hanging on a 4 poster bed. Our hand-crafted beds offer the flexibility to request either a single, double, twin –share or triple occupancy. Cots for babies are available.

Things to do in Entebbe

Entebbe is home to Entebbe International Airport, Uganda’s largest commercial airport. This attractive & verdant town situated by the shores of Lake Victoria has a relaxed pace of life and natural attractions that give the city its charm. Unless you have reason to rush into Kampala The Capital city 40Kms away, Entebbe makes a nice, chilled-out introduction to Uganda. It’s also the ideal place to start and end your trip if you’re stuck with one of the many early morning flights in/out of Uganda.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Established in 1998, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is now home to 49 orphaned rescued chimpanzees from throughout Uganda. This project is run by Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT) to provide exceptional opportunity to the Orphaned Chimpanzees while educating visitors and local communities about this remarkable species. Two half day speed scheduled boat trips depart the main land daily to view either a morning or afternoon feeding which is just fun to watch the chimps interact with one another, raise their hands for food, use sticks to reach the food that didn’t make it over the fence, hear an informative talk by sanctuary staff, viewing a neighboring fishing village, bird watching, other wildlife encounters, or just sunbathe and enjoy the island.

  • Tour cost: $US88.00 per person (subject to minimum number of 4 people on board)
  • Children: Between 5- 15 years half price & under 5 years – Free of charge.
  • Tour time/duration: Morning viewing 9.00am -1.00pm. Afternoon viewing 12.45pm- 5.00pm. Boat ride on Lake Victoria is approximately 50 minutes on a speed boat each way.
  • What is included: Return boat transfers, island entrance fees & life jacket.
  • What to carry: Sunglasses, rain jacket in rainy season and wear sun cream for persons with sensitive skin as Entebbe is hot in the drier seasons.

Mabamba Shoebill Tour

Mabamba Swamp, west of Entebbe is one of the best few places to see the elusive shoe-bill stork – one of Africa`s most endangered birds. This tour can go either with a motorized canoe or drive. The best departure time is 6:00am and morning visits are recommended when the birds stalk their main prey, otherwise this tour can go between 6:30am – 3pm.

Boat Option – The tour has a lot to offer even if you’re not an avid bird watcher. The tour begins with a walk through a vibrant harbor local market, then a ride across the Lake Victoria by boat (45 minutes ride) to Mamba swamp, where you then switch to a small dugout canoe and venture into the papyrus marsh in search of The Shoebill. Other interesting things to see is the fascinating biodiversity, water birds, and island stopover which is home to farmers and fishermen.

  • Road option – The drive is 1.5 hours each way on a dirt road. But going by boat across the Lake Victoria is highly recommended which gives you an opportunity to see many of the birds that you may otherwise miss.

  • Tour duration: Approximately 3-5 hours.
  • What is included: Return boat transfers, Shoe bill tracking fees & life jacket.
  • What to carry/wear: Wear light long sleeve pants & shirt and take with you sunglasses, a hat, and sun cream, insect repellent, bottled water, water proof in the rainy season a waterproof bag for camera equipment, binoculars and telephoto lenses

Biking Tour

This guided bike tour is the perfect way to explore the main spots of Entebbe within a few hours. Depending on the tour package, highlights may include – downtown, the local market with very tasty sun kissed fruits, vibrant ferry harbor, the station, beautiful viewpoints over Lake Victoria, The botanical gardens, reptile village & a glimpse of The President’s residence. Most of the biking routes are easy and very manageable with some small hills of moderate difficulty. Children from 10 years or 9 (if meets the required height) are allowed on this tour.

  • Tour cost: Range from $US25.00 – 60.00 per person – depending on the tour package
  • Tour time/duration: 2 – 6 hours, can be adjusted to suit your interest
  • What is included: Entrance fees, bottled water, a local snack, a bike + helmet and an experienced guide.
  • What to carry: Sunglasses, a hat, covered shoes suitable for biking and wear sun cream for persons with sensitive skin as Entebbe is hot in the drier seasons

Uganda Wildlife Education Center

This is an educational center within Entebbe and is one stop center where you see most of the animals found in Uganda. Many of the animals here have been rescued from poachers or illegal traders, or from injury in the wild. If you don’t have time to go on a proper safari and have only several hours before your flight, here you get all of it condensed. You can take a walk and get to see from lions to elephants and lot’s of birds from the shoebill, fish eagles or engage n other in depth experiences such as “Chimpanzee Close-up”, and “Keeper for a Day Experience” and “Behind the Scenes Tours” which is very popular among visitors.

Behind the scene tour – is a two-hour entertaining and educational adventure that offers special hands on experience and interesting information about how residents (animals and birds) are cared for. This activity offers opportunity for a ‘close up’ and personal encounter with the lions, elephant plus many more animals you perhaps have not imagined meeting before!

Fees: Adults – USD70, Children – USD35.00

This tour is offered daily from 9am – 12:00pm & 2:30pm – 4.30pm

Entebbe Botanical Gardens

This beautiful gardens appeal to nature lovers. It boots a number of plants, birds, monkeys and a spectacular scenic view of the Lake Victoria – a good way to relax while in Entebbe. You can explore the garden independently although taking a guide with you is highly recommended for a better understanding about the plants and history.

Tour cost: $US5.00 per person excluding guide

Sunset Cruise

This cruise will take you close to the lake shores, past a fishing village and airport while you watch the sun set with opportunity to watch some amazing bird life on the water’s edge. Drinks and snacks plus finger foods are plenty on board. The cruise departs at 6:00pm and best time to view the sunset is 6:45PM.

  • Tour cost: USD150.00 per for up to a minimum of 5 persons on board
  • Tour duration: 1- 1.5  hours
