Nestled in Senior Quarters, a leafy residential area of Gulu town, African Roots Guesthouse Gulu is well placed between two amazing National Parks – Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley. Other close attractions include; Aruu Falls, Fort Patiko (Sir Samuel Baker’s Camp) and Guru Guru Hills a site of rebellion against British colonialism in 1911. The Guesthouse boasts of fourteen en suite bedrooms spread across the property, enabling each guest to enjoy our personalized service. On site is a double deck Tiki (grass thatched) hut themed Restaurant that offers causal and fine dining options with a cozy bar on the upper deck. We have;

Our fourteen spacious bedrooms offer – fine percale linen, en suite bathroom & showers, fast Wi-Fi, a desk & chair, firm mattresses and custom-designed mosquito nets. African Roots Guesthouse Gulu is our newest addition to the African Roots brand, opening her doors to the public in June 2018.  It was originally a private residencebuilt in late 90’s now transformed into a fully functional Guesthouse alongside a café, restaurant and a cocktail bar.

Our open double Tiki deck dining area fused in a blend of African & modern décor overlooking the garden makes dining with us worthwhile. Dining options include –causal, outdoor & fine dining.

Our menu – Our chefs have created a menu that reflects the image of African Roots – Simple, laid back and fresh with great taste. Our dishes are prepared locally with the freshest ingredients raised and grown from our community.

Breakfasts are included in the room rate; lunch menu is available throughout the day and available to order on an A-la-carte basis. Each evening African Roots serves fresh and tasty full course meals. If you have any special dietary requirements, just let us know in advance and we will be happy to alter the menu for you. Drive Bar

Enjoy a selection of our local and international beers, spirits, cocktails and African Roots creations on the upper deck in a relaxing setup while enjoying the sounds of soothing African music. Drinks are held overlooking the Guesthouse mini garden which makes an ideal location for a pre-dinner evening drink.


  • Gulu Bike tours

Our guided biking trails cover short to longer distances around Gulu town. Taking  our bike tour gives one the opportunity to mingle with the community. Tour highlights may include – the local market, Gulu town, cultural village, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Lacor Hospital, Laroo quarry works, Sir Samuel Baker School etc. Bikes can be hired for individual/personal un-guided tours.


  • Fort Patiko (Sir Samuel Baker’s Camp)

Just 40 minutes’ drive north of Gulu town is Fort Patiko (Sir Samuel Baker’s Camp) situated in a nice rural area of Ajulu on Ocecu hill. This important historical location was a modern slavery hub for the Arabs slave masters. While the history and remains of the camp site are rather interesting, the natural beauty of the landscape is breath taking with fantastic views of isolatedrocky outcrops beyond the fortwith views of vast open vegetation seen miles away. There is also a nice opportunity to take a walk/hike in the surrounding area to one of the close hills.


  • Aruu Falls

These seven lines of cascading streams of roaring waterfalls offer a thrilling unforgettable and adventurous experience. This place is ideal for adventure seekers. You can enjoy a dip below the waterfall, hike up the ragged rocks with not so well defined path, enjoy bird watching or a picnic day out to appreciate nature. The road to the falls is off the beat and facilities at the camp site need a little uplift.Aruu Falls is 47 km away from Gulu town and AR safaris can handle your excursion – kindly contact us for more details.

  • Murchison Falls National Park

Tucked in the Northern part of Uganda, (300km from Kampala & 130km from Gulu town),  Murchison Falls is where the Nile surges through a narrow gorge gap over a massive drop to placid river whose banks are a haven for Hippos, Crocodiles and a variety of birds including fish Eagles, bee-eaters, and Kingfishers among others.  Activities here include – Game drive, Nile river boat cruises, breakfast, cheese and wine sunset cruise.
